Was listening to 3-9-81 this morning on my way to work. The Stranger that opens the show goes into this awesome extended jam. Jerry has the mu-tron (autowah effect) and distortion on and does some incredible jazzy runs throughout. I was wondering if anyone knew of other versions of the song that are similar or better?

In fact, I'd like to hear some other tunes that have these loose jams with those guitar effects. Shakedown is another one. What others? Examples?

Also, on a side note - there was clearly something magical going on whenever the Dead played MSG in NYC. Phil mentions it in his book and it's obvious from the recordings. There is just this energy in the air that fuels the band. In some shows the crowd just goes completely wild before the first note is even played! Anyone know any other good MSG shows besides the obvious classics?

yes it is the mutron pedal...Garcia uses it primarily on Stranger, Estimated, Fire, Shakedown and in Playin' jams...definitely check out 10-18-1984 for a smokin' Stranger and jam...10-02-1977 Fire features Garcia playing an inspired mutron solo on the first break and throughout...in later years garcia kind of melded the mutron with the midi and so forth, but it would still pop up...

Always loved the Stranger that opens set 2 of 4/19/82 - Right on, tight and hot > into Franklins. Matter of fact, that whole show is hot but it is mostly noted for the "Raven / Nitrous Space"

The whole 91 run of MSG shows were amazing, especially since you had 2 keyboard players who really didn't know what the hell they were doing.

Try the stranger from 7-4-81 (i think) It opens the second set.
